Maple Sap

A few weeks ago we tapped a few maple trees to collect sap. Then the weather has been all crazy and we haven't collected much. But today was great sap weather and the trees ran all day. We collected at about 10:30 this morning and again this afternoon and our jugs were running over each time. It is so exciting! For those of you who are thinking...why on earth would you collect the sap of a tree...it makes maple syrup.

For those who are interested, we first found hard or sugar maples...soft maples will not work. Then we drilled holes in the trees and put in pvc pipe to make a spout. Then the boys taste-tested the sap to make sure it is sweet. You can see Aiden in the top picture testing with my dad and Maverick tasted-testing with Shane in the bottom picture. Then we put a hole in the top of a gallon water jug near the handle to put the spout in. And tie off the handle to a nail above the spout so that when the jug is full it doesn't fall off. Then we wait for the sap to run. I will take a picture tomorrow when we go to collect again and show you what our "operation" looks like. The boys just love it...and they haven't even seen the boiling down fun!
